The Temple of Edfu

 

The Temple of Edfu or the Temple of Horus is the second largest temple of ancient Egypt, after the Temple of Karnak.
Edfu temple is located in the City of Edfu in Upper Egypt on the west bank of the Nile River.
Edfu temple is one of the most famous temples in Aswan.
Most travelers are keen on visiting Aswan to visit the temple of Edfu and see its majesty. 

When was the temple of Edfu built and for which god?

The temple was devoted to the main god Horus. It is one of the best tourist destinations in Egypt.
The temple was built during the rule of the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BC.
Drawings on its walls provide important information about language, myths and religion during Egypt’s Hellenistic period.
There are also some important scenes and inscriptions from the sacred drama
recounting the ancient conflict between Horus and Seth Interpreted during the German Edfu project.
The ancient ritualistic symbols and letters mention that the temple building was constructed where a great battle took place between Horus and St.

The design of the temple of Edfu

 

The temple devoted to the worship of the god Horus consists of a huge cane of two towers advanced by
two granite statues of Horus in the form of a falcon.
The front of the edifice adorns views of King Ptolemy XII as he triumphs over his enemies,
and other views depict him with idols.

The entrance of the temple 

The huge temple gate leads to an open courtyard containing pillars with plant crowns such as the Grand and Small Pillar Lounge,
from to the reviewed lounges and then the Temple’s Holiness.
We can also find scenes from the founding of the temple and the King’s relationship with the idols in the Hall of Great Pillars.
While the walls of the courtyard adorn a view depicting the journey of the holy
compound of the God of Horus and the goddess of Hor.

The great Column Lounge

The great column lounge includes about 18 columns matched in three rows each row with three columns,
distinguishing the diversity of crowns’ beauty.

The Small Columns Lounge

The small columns lounge was called the supervisory hall, containing 12 columns and crowns rich in floral decorations.
On the western side of this Hall, there is a room for the preservation of holy water.
Its views represent the King, accompanied by the God providing holy water to Horus and Hathur.

Holy of Holies

A large independent base which no one was allowed to enter other than the great priest or the King
and was placed in the sacred compound of a guard with Nawos bearing the name of King Nektenpo I and a statue of the Holy Falcon Mr. Edfu.
Around the Holy of Holies, there are ten halls in which various rituals were performed or the tools of rituals were reserved.
